WHAT DO CADETS THINK ABOUT THE CADET PROGRAM?

Over the past few days, Cadets MC Acharya A., MC Troy, and POC2 Miller were interviewed and asked a few questions regarding the Cadet program, mainly on their experience in it and their personal take on it. All of their responses are included in this article, with nothing edited out. Let's see their perspective on the Cadet program.

First Question: How did you learn about the Cadet program?

  • MC Troy: "I learned about the Cadet program from my friend from school, who's now an Air Cadet."

  • MC Acharya A.: "I had a lot of free time and I was looking into extracurriculars to do. I learned about the Cadet program from a friend who was already a Cadet. He recommended that I look into the program and maybe even join. After that, I did some research into the Cadet program and the three different elements. I came to the conclusion that Sea Cadets were probably the best fit for me, and I registered to join Warspite that same week."

  • POC2 Miller: "I learned about cadets from my father, who was in the Navy and recommended me to a local corps, which was Warspite!"

Second Question: What pushed you to join the Cadet program?

  • MC Troy: "I decided to join the Sea Cadet program because my friend told me I would get a free pizza. The first day I entered cadets, I loved it, and it wasn't just about the pizza anymore."

  • MC Acharya A.: "I think one of the main things that pushed me to join the Cadet program was the opportunity to learn different things I wouldn't have been able to learn outside of Cadets. I was interested by the fact that I would have the opportunity to sail/operate a boat. I was also interested in the possible opportunity to gain outdoor survival skills and first aid experience. Overall, the reason that pushed me most to join the Cadet program was the opportunity to gain skills and experiences I probably wouldn't have been able to get elsewhere."

  • POC2 Miller: "I saw all the cool things that the corps was offering and thought that this was perfect for me. All the activities were a big point for me to join."

Third Question: How has your experience in the Cadet program been so far?

  • MC Troy: "My experience with the Cadet program has been amazing. I've learned things I never would have learned, I've made new friends and connections, and we get to do super fun stuff like marksmanship, gym, and Guard."

  • MC Acharya A.: "My experience at the Cadet program has been amazing so far. I have learned and experienced so many things I wouldn't have if I wasn't in the Cadet program. Whether it be learning different naval communication skills, practicing marksmanship, or helping me work on teamwork, the Cadet program has given me the opportunity to learn and expand on multiple skills like these. All the experiences I've had in the Cadet program so far have been to my benefit."

  • POC2 Miller: "I have had a great experience with Cadets. I have gotten a free trip to Kingston, completed my volunteer hours through Cadets, and made great relationships."

Fourth Question: What is one thing you will take away from the Cadet program?

  • MC Troy: "Something I'll take away from the Cadet program is that there's always someone to help you and teach you. Everyone is welcome to have a great time and learn new things."

  • MC Acharya A.: "While there are many things I can take away from the Cadet program, if I had to take only one thing away, it would probably be that you can accomplish so much more if you work as a team. And with that, what makes a good team; I've learned that you need good communication, coordination, and you need to listen to each other's ideas and respect them. Cadets have definitely led me to become a better team member, whether it be at Cadets itself or in my day-to-day life."

  • POC2 Miller: "The leadership experience is one of the big things I will take away, but some other things are the connections I have made and the life skills I have learned."

Fifth question: Would you recommend anyone else to join the Cadet program?

  • MC Troy: "I would recommend people who don't really do many things outside of school to join. This is because it really spices up your life and gives you something to always strive for, whether it's a higher rank, winning a competition, and many more. I would also recommend this to these people because even though Cadets is awesome, if you strive to participate in the most that you can, it takes up a lot of time."

  • MC Acharya A.: "Yes, I would recommend other people to join the Cadet program. The Cadet program gives you the opportunity to experience things you simply cannot experience elsewhere. I highly recommend that anyone eligible should look into the Cadet program and what each element has to offer. It is a great opportunity to learn skills and make connections you will find useful for the rest of your life."

  • POC2 Miller: "Oh yes, all the time! Cadets is one of the best programs in Canada, and everything is free, so anyone can join. The program is so inclusive as well, so I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to hear about it!"

And that was all the questions that were asked. I'd like to thank the Cadets, Troy, Acharya A., and PO Miller for taking time out of their precious summer break to help answer the questions for this article. Their insights into the Cadet program were displayed in this article. If you are interested in joining the Cadet program, particularly Sea Cadets, I would definitely recommend it myself.

Register for the Cadet program if you want to learn skills, make memories, and dive into new experiences. It is open to youth 12 to 18. Please read the website for more information.
